Repost | Beating the Winter Blues

Y’all. I think the groundhog lied. I’m starting to feel as though winter will never be over. I try not to complain too much because I know there are places much colder than Oklahoma. However, I’m over the teasing of the Oklahoma weather system. One day it’ll be 20 degrees and the next it’ll be 70. I feel like I could go crazy at any moment, haha! Not to mention, also, that my hands and feet are chronically frozen. Whatevs.

Today I’m reposting a blog post that I wrote a little over 2 years ago. It’s so easy to write content and then just forget about it. However, I thought it would be fitting to repost this one–because maybe some of these tips will be useful to you too during this frigid and glacial time. Ok, I’ll stop being dramatic now. Enjoy!

Beating the Winter Blues
December 17, 2016

Now that daylight savings time is over, the days are much shorter and it gets dark SO much earlier. The other day it was almost pitch black at 5:00 in the afternoon and I felt exhausted because it felt like it was 10:00 at night. Does anyone else get into hibernation mode and become a complete couch-potato? Not to mention that it is also becoming colder and blankets, comfy clothes, and blasting the heat sound so much more appealing than anything else. In case this fits your description here are some things you can do to help beat the winter blues.

Stay active

The winter weather and darkness can make you feel like a completely unmotivated blob. Try to get in at last 30 minutes of exercise a day by either bundling up and going for a walk, going to the gym, or park a little further away from the front doors of places where you are Christmas shopping. I know that my mood and energy levels are significantly different when I make an effort to get moving.

Be around people

Surrounding yourself with people who care about you and vice versa can lift your spirits so much! Being with family and friends is definitely better than secluding yourself. I know that some people can only handle so much “people time” and need some time to be alone–but don’t make the being alone part a lengthy habit.

Plan things

Instead of just going home and planting yourself in front of Netflix, why not plan something fun? Some ideas are going ice skating, going out to dinner or having friends over for dinner, driving around to look at Christmas lights, go see a movie at the theatre, FaceTime or Skype someone who lives out-of-town, go see a Christmas play or show, etc.

Fun night at home

On the nights that you just need a relaxing evening at home, plan what you are going to do that evening. Find a movie that you love, pop some popcorn, make some coffee/tea/hot chocolate, put on a face mask, read a book, give yourself a manicure/pedicure, etc.

Light

Just because it is pitch black outside, it does not mean you have to be in the dark, as well. When you are home, light some candles, plug-in those Christmas lights, light a fire in the fireplace, and just make it cozy.

January Bless Box Reveal

It’s time for another Bless Box un-boxing! I’ve written several times about how much I love Bless Box and how exciting it is to get a treat in the mail each month. I have loved being able to try out new things and maybe even things I wouldn’t typically buy for myself. Here is what came in the January Bless Box!

Wen Winter Cranberry Mint Replenishing Treatment Mist: Retail $20.00

These smell so good and are so cooling on the skin. I’ve already been trying these out and have really been enjoying them. The mist even came with a travel-sized bottle and it’s already in my purse for on-the-go. The treatment oil is good for the skin and hair and the mist can be used on the face, hair, and skin.

Juice Beauty Photo-Pigment Precision Eye Pencil: Retail $20.00

I like that this eye pencil is more of a grey shade and not black. I don’t wear eyeliner very often but when I do, it can sometimes look a little too harsh on me–so I’m looking forward to testing this out. Plus, I’m sure you know by now how much I love grey!

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream: Retail $7.00

Amika Triple Rx Shampoo: Retail $10.00

I will take all the moisturizer I can get this winter! My hands have been so dry lately and I’ve been trying to apply hand cream as often as I can. As far as the shampoo, I have never used this before because it contains wheat–but I’m sure it’s great because I really like other Amika products.

December Favorites

My December favorites were used so much last month and I know that I’ll keep using them a lot in the next few months. Without further delay, let’s get into what they are!

This Is Us

lg_news_This_Is_Us_NBC_gm

This television show has been mentioned as a favorite before but I’ve been catching up on Season 2 lately. This show is so masterfully written and the individual stories are portrayed in such realistic ways. Yes, it’s an emotional roller coaster and you know that you’re going to have a little piece of your heart hurt for the characters when you watch it–but I don’t think there are many shows like This Is Us out right now.

Voluspa Candle Pandora Lychee

95932e8e-db38-42ee-8db5-d7d642e0af2e

I bought this candle during a Black Friday sale at Anthropologie and have almost burned it completely. This scent is fruity but also smells like it has hints of pine–so it’s a really nice light, fresh, and winter scented candle.

Kristin Ess Haircare

e49b6ae8-98a4-40d3-9b69-620a4768f352

I’ve seen this brand at Target before and always thought that the packaging was really nice. My cousin, Grace, recommended that I try it and I bought a bottle of the Signature Shampoo when I ran out of my normal shampoo. The fragrance of this product is incredible and reminds me a lot of the Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume. The shampoo is affordable for being more on the “luxury” side and the formula is really gentle. My hair also feels like it has a different texture and wave after I have used it and it helps to keep my hair cleaner on those in-between-wash-days.

& Other Stories Boxy Knit Sweater

This sweater! My cousin, Bec, gifted this to me for Christmas and I have worn it several times since. Don’t worry–I have cleaned it in between wears, haha! This is so comfy, soft, and I love a classic grey sweater. The fit is, also, a little looser and a little bit over-sized. I plan on getting a lot of wear and use out of this sweater and I love it so much!

Essie Nail Polish in Bahama Mama

This nail polish shade has been the one I’ve been wearing the most in December. I think this color is a really nice one for winter and the holidays. The Essie nail polish formula is also way more long-lasting than most other brands I’ve tried and it’s definitely the one I gravitate towards.

Mossimo Slouchy Beanie

1665b869-fcb1-45d3-82ef-47f2a597ab48

It has been COLD in Oklahoma this last week and I’ve been piling on all the layers I can! I’ve worn this beanie a lot lately because it keeps my ears warm and it’s super soft.

My Goals for 2018

Bye, 2017! Hello and welcome, 2018! I can’t believe another year has passed and it was definitely a full year! It’s been awesome to reflect over the past year and also start to make plans for the next. I’m looking forward to seeing what 2018 will bring and tell you about those highlights next year. Before I get into telling you my goals for 2018–here are some of the highlights from the past year.

Highlights of 2017:

-1 year anniversary of my blog
-Went to Chicago to see my sister and her family
-Ran a St. Patrick’s Day 5k with my dad
-Went to Maine to see my best friend
-Helped to pick out my sister’s puppy named Franklin
-Did Whole30 twice
-Went to DC with 2 of my sisters for a week
-Went to Dallas with family
-Went to Virginia to see cousins
-Bought my first real, nice camera and started taking photos seriously
-Went to Dallas again for the Declare Conference
-Ran my second half marathon and this time with my pregnant sister (she’s a rock star)
-Ran a Thanksgiving Day Hog Jog with almost every member of my immediate family
-Went to Chicago again
-Went to 7 weddings
-Celebrated lots of family birthdays
-Had lots of aunt time
-Finding out that I’m going to be an aunt to more babies in 2018

My heart is so overwhelmed with all of these amazing things that happened and I’m so glad that I wrote each thing down. Although there were some bumps and difficult times in 2017, the amount of good things and experiences totally made up for them. I am thankful for every single thing that happened in 2017.

I have a few goals that I am setting for myself this next year and I thought I would share those with you today. Do you usually set goals or resolutions for the new year? I would love to hear what some of yours are!

My Goals for 2018:

43fae94c-3010-4d7d-adb0-8fff8e60ae25

I wrote a post, last year, about my struggles with being fearful and wanted to share some encouragement to others in that post. Even though I wrote that post and know those truths to be real, I still struggle with this battle every day. Even when I may seem like I’m fine, the battle within can sometimes be crippling for me. But this year, I want to be more purposeful about giving fearful thoughts straight to the Lord and not allowing them to consume my mind. Joshua 1:9 says “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” and in Mark 6:50, Jesus says this to his disciples when they were afraid–“Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” I want to worry less this year, and in years to come, and trust completely in God and His plans for my life.

This year I would love to try to put out 3 blog posts a week! I’m going to be changing my posting schedule from Tuesday/Friday to posting Monday/Wednesday/Friday and will try my best to stick to that new schedule. Some weeks are much harder than others to publish new content, especially because of my full-time job and those commitments. However, I’m excited to share more posts with you this next year!

70872871-1fe3-43a5-96fb-3de2f355909a

The last 2 months haven’t been great ones for me when it comes to staying active. After training and running a half marathon, I decided I was just way too tired and would rather be a couch potato. But the times that I have been consistent with exercising have been the times that I’ve felt and slept the best. So, this year I want to be the most consistent with going to the gym and go at least 3-4 times a week.

I bought my first Canon in September and it’s been so fun to use! The photos that I’ve taken have turned out so well and I can’t wait to travel with the camera and take more photos. I hope to also share some of those photos with you this next year.

Happy new year friends!
